Painter Hiroshi Senju creates luminous, contemplative works that bridge Japanese aesthetics, 19th-century European traditions, and postwar abstraction. Drawing on natural phenomena such as waterfalls and nightfall, his paintings balance representation with abstraction through fluid cascades of acrylic and the use of natural pigments, which lend a heightened chromatic intensity. His “Nightfall” series stands out for its use of fluorescent paint against dark grounds, evoking a sense of the sublime that, as art historian Donald Kuspit suggests, reaches beyond the visible world to capture a deeper, almost spiritual totality.
