YUICHI INOUE was one of the most important Japanese artists of the 20th century, often mentioned alongside figures such as Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Pierre Alechinsky, and Henri Michaux. Known for his radically expressive approach to calligraphy, he used kanji characters not for their aesthetic value but as a direct expression of inner energy and emotional state. Despite gaining international recognition through major exhibitions, including documenta II and shows at leading museums in Tokyo, Kyoto, New York, and Amsterdam, he remained deeply self-critical and avoided frequent exhibiting, focusing instead on his creative process.
