Yves Klein was a pioneering French Conceptual artist whose influential practice spanned painting, performance, and sculpture. He is best known for developing and patenting his signature pigment, International Klein Blue (IKB), which became central to his monochrome works of the 1950s. His celebrated Anthropométries series saw nude models act as “living brushes,” imprinting their bodies onto canvases in vivid blue. Deeply inspired by Eastern mysticism and his studies of judo in Japan, Klein co-founded the Nouveau Réalisme movement in 1960 alongside artists such as Arman, Jean Tinguely, and François Dufrêne. His iconic work Leap into the Void exemplifies his blend of performance, spirituality, and conceptual rigor, setting him apart from contemporaneous movements like Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Despite his brief career, Klein’s legacy endures in major institutions including Museum of Modern Art, Tate, Centre Georges Pompidou, and National Gallery of Art. 1961.
